When should I postpone my USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 CK?
Postpone if your last two NBME forms are below our targets, or your trend is flat or declining. Also postpone if you've had a major life event recently, or your confidence is 1 or 2 out of 5. Our tutoring target for Step 1 is 65% or higher on NBME forms. For Step 2 CK it is 228 or higher, and the passing score is 218.
What NBME score do I need to pass Step 1?
Our tutoring target for Step 1 is 65% or higher on NBME forms. Two NBMEs above 65% with an upward trend is the signal we like to see. Below 60% with no climb, we recommend postponing. Your NBME score report also shows an estimated chance of passing.
What NBME 3-digit score do I need to pass Step 2 CK?
The passing 3-digit for Step 2 CK is 218, effective July 1, 2025. Our tutoring target is 228 or higher on your last two NBME forms, which gives you room for test-day variation. Above 230 is strong. Below 214 with no upward trend is a signal to postpone.
How many NBMEs should I take before testing?
In our tutoring, students take 3 to 5 NBME forms during dedicated, with the last two in the final 2 to 3 weeks. Two forms in a row above your target is the signal we like to see going into test day.
How long should I postpone Step 1 / Step 2 if I do?
In our tutoring, we usually recommend 4 weeks. We use 2 weeks when you're on the green and yellow border with a clear upward trend across recent NBMEs. Two-week steps let you check again without committing to a full month.
How do UWSA and AMBOSS scores compare to NBME?
UWSA and AMBOSS self-assessments track with Step performance, but these tests are calibrated differently, so compare each score to its own guidance rather than to each other. UWSA tends to track closely with Step 2 CK 3-digit scores. Use them as extra signals. We weigh NBME forms most heavily.
Does Step 2 CK percentile actually matter for residency?
Yes. With Step 1 now Pass/Fail, Step 2 CK 3-digit scores carry more weight in residency applications. We aim for at least 10 points above the passing score. Targets vary by specialty.
I have testing anxiety. Should I postpone Step 1 or Step 2?
Postponing alone does not fix anxiety. We have seen strong students struggle on test day because of anxiety. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, studying, or daily life, talk with a doctor or counselor. Higher practice scores also give you a buffer. Start early, since appointments take time.
What if my school has a Step 1 / Step 2 deadline?
Check your school's deadline and the USMLE rescheduling fees before you move your date. A postpone should fit inside that deadline. Schools sometimes grant extensions if you document your test-prep work. A leave of absence (LOA) is a real option many students do not know about.
