Should I postpone my COMLEX Level 1 or Level 2?
An honest answer in under 60 seconds, built from a tutor's checklist instead of a single COMSAE score. Your full picture goes in. COMSAEs, UWSA, TrueLearn, COMQUEST, AMBOSS, qbank percentile, trend, school deadlines, and a quick gut-check. NBOME's COMSAE-only bands miss too much of the picture.

Frequently asked questions
When should I postpone my COMLEX Level 1 or Level 2?
Postpone if your last two COMSAEs are below 400, your trend is flat or declining, you've had a major life event, or your confidence is at 1–2 out of 5. Per NBOME's published study, COMSAE 450 = ~97% pass; consistently below 400 with no upward trend is a strong red flag.
What COMSAE score predicts a COMLEX pass?
NBOME's data: COMSAE 350 = ~75% pass, 400 = ~94%, 450 = ~97%. For COMLEX Level 1 we aim for two consecutive scores above 400 with an upward trend, ideally 450+. For Level 2, ideal is 500+ since real-exam scores commonly drop 50–100 points from COMSAE projections.
How long should I postpone COMLEX if I do?
4 weeks is the typical recommendation. Use 2 weeks only if you're on the green/yellow border with a clearly upward trend. Two-week postpone increments let you re-evaluate without committing to a full month at a time.
How do TrueLearn, COMQUEST, and UWSA compare to COMSAE?
TrueLearn and COMQUEST self-assessments use percentile scoring that correlates with COMLEX outcomes but is not as tightly calibrated as NBOME's own COMSAE. UWSA uses a 3-digit scale closer to USMLE. It is a useful supplementary signal but not a primary predictor for COMLEX. COMSAE remains the gold standard.
Does failing COMAT shelves predict COMLEX Level 2 trouble?
Yes. NBOME's 2018 validity study found COMAT clinical subjects correlate with COMLEX Level 2-CE at r = 0.49 to 0.68, a statistically significant relationship. Multiple shelf failures are a strong signal that strategy support before testing is worth the call.
I have testing anxiety. Should I postpone COMLEX?
Anxiety is a silent score-killer. It has dropped students with 600+ COMSAEs to a COMLEX fail. Postponing alone does not fix anxiety. It requires therapy, possibly medication, and a buffer of higher COMSAE scores than a non-anxious student would aim for.
What if my school has a COMLEX deadline?
Tell us the deadline and we cap any postpone recommendation before it. Schools sometimes grant extensions with documented test-readiness work, and a leave of absence is on the table for students who genuinely need more time before their next attempt.
